The Supreme Court on Monday announced its intention to examine the Maharashtra government's plea challenging the remission granted to Arun Gawli, the gangster-turned-politician, who is serving a life sentence for murder.

A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan stated that Gawli, now aged 71-72, is not the same figure from the 1980s. Senior Advocate Raja Thakare, representing Maharashtra, emphasized that Gawli's offenses were societal and not just individual, arguing that the gravity of his crimes must be considered.

In contrast, Senior Advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, arguing for Gawli, highlighted his eligibility for premature release under a 2006 policy for elderly and infirm prisoners. The court noted Gawli's age and health concerns but maintained its stay on his premature release, setting the next hearing and review of the case for July 31.
