Jaishankar Reaffirms India's Commitment to Mauritius During Two-Day Visit

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Mauritius to strengthen bilateral ties and support the nation's progress. He inaugurated community projects, exchanged MoUs, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to the 'Neighbourhood First Policy' and the Global South, underscoring the historical and cultural bonds between the two countries.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday reaffirmed India's consistent and continued support to Mauritius in its quest for progress and prosperity.

Jaishankar is in Mauritius for a two-day visit aimed at furthering productive engagements with the nation's leadership and enhancing special bilateral ties.

This visit marks one of Jaishankar's first significant bilateral activities since his re-appointment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term in office. At an event with Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, Jaishankar emphasized that India's relationship with Mauritius has blossomed into a multifaceted partnership, serving as a model for India's development collaborations abroad.

The event featured the inauguration of 12 High Impact Community Development Projects funded by India, and the signing of MoUs on education, culture, digitisation of Immigration Archives, and collaboration in space and innovation sectors.

The duo also handed over OCI cards to seventh-generation Indian-origin people residing in Mauritius, highlighting the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties.

Jaishankar's visit underscores the significance of the India-Mauritius relationship and is a testament to India's 'Neighbourhood First Policy', Vision SAGAR, and its dedication to the Global South. The Indian High Commission in Mauritius noted that extensive historical, demographic, and cultural connections drive the strong relationship, with nearly 70% of Mauritius’s population being of Indian origin.
