NYC Councilwoman Arrested for Allegedly Biting Officer During Homeless Shelter Protest

New York City councilwoman Susan Zhuang was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly biting a police officer during a heated protest over the construction of a new homeless shelter in Brooklyn, authorities reported.

Zhuang faces charges of assault, resisting arrest, and obstruction, according to a police spokesperson. Her office has not issued any comments yet.

Social media footage from the south Brooklyn protest captures confrontations between police and demonstrators at the proposed homeless shelter site. One video shows a woman, identified as Zhuang, clashing with officers while trying to remove barricades, before being handcuffed. Another clip depicts her being escorted away by police.

Law enforcement officials stated that Zhuang obstructed officers who were assisting a woman on the ground, pushed them, and ultimately bit an officer when they attempted to apprehend her.

Earlier on Wednesday, Zhuang posted a video on the social media platform X, disputing the legality of the construction and criticizing the Mayor's office for permitting work at 5 a.m. in their neighborhood.

The Brooklyn district attorney's office has not yet arraigned Zhuang as of Wednesday afternoon, a spokesman confirmed.
