Bihar Assembly Passes Lift and Escalator Regulation Bill 2024

The Bihar Assembly has passed a bill making the registration of lifts and escalators mandatory in multi-storied buildings. Tabled by Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, the bill seeks to regulate the usage of such equipment to ensure safety. Offenders will face fines and mandatory inspections every three years.

The Bihar Assembly on Wednesday passed a landmark bill aiming to regulate the installation of lifts and escalators in multi-storied buildings. The Bihar Lift and Escalator Bill, 2024, was presented by Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav and approved by voice vote despite an opposition walkout.

Yadav emphasized that unregistered lifts and escalators in various buildings, including commercial complexes and hospitals, would now be illegal. He noted an increase in the construction of such structures and underscored the need for safety regulations to prevent accidents.

The bill mandates regular inspections every three years and sets the operational life of these machines at 20 years. Additionally, it includes provisions for insurance and compensation in case of accidents through third-party insurance.
