Italian Minister Calls for Peace Amid Middle East Tensions

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has engaged in critical discussions to avert further conflict in the Middle East with his Israeli and Lebanese counterparts, Israel Katz and Bou Habib. The dialogue comes after a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights resulted in the tragic deaths of 12 children and teens.

Tajani stressed the importance of breaking the ongoing cycle of violence, calling on Hezbollah to adhere to U.N. Security Council resolution 1701 to prevent an Israeli counterattack. He mentioned that while the evacuation of around 3,000 Italian civilians in Lebanon is not currently necessary, it remains a contingency should the situation deteriorate.

Reaffirming Italy's commitment to peace and stability, Tajani highlighted the country's significant role in the United Nations' peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, which includes over 1,000 Italian peacekeepers. He reiterated the need for protection of the UNIFIL contingent and supported any mediation initiatives to foster dialogue and de-escalation.
