A Malaysian of Chinese origin, Choo Soon Kooi, has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for causing a fatal accident last year in Singapore. The incident involved a 22-year-old Indian-origin motorcyclist, Thinagaran Murugan, who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The accident occurred on August 4 in the Tuas industrial region when Choo's car struck Murugan's motorcycle. At the time, Choo was smuggling duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore and fled the scene after the collision.

Choo attempted to escape to Malaysia but was apprehended at Woodlands Checkpoint, which connects Singapore to Peninsula Malaysia. Aside from the main charge of causing death by driving without reasonable consideration, Choo also faced five other traffic and Customs-related offences that were considered during sentencing. He will be disqualified from driving in Singapore for eight years following his release.
