Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is weighing whether to pardon Rico Krieger, a German sentenced to death on terrorism and other charges, the BelTA state news agency reported on Tuesday.

Belarus's ally Russia is negotiating with the West about potential exchanges involving U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich and other Westerners currently held in Russia. An exchange may involve Vadim Krasikov, a Russian serving a life sentence in Germany, potentially necessitating a reciprocal compromise from Berlin.

Germany confirmed a citizen's death sentence in Belarus, which remains the sole European country enforcing the death penalty. Krieger claimed Ukrainian security dictated actions against Belarus last October. Unclear if under duress, he expressed regret, seeking Lukashenko's pardon.
