Belarusian President Pardons German Sentenced to Death: Diplomatic Moves Unfold
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has pardoned German national Rico Krieger, sentenced to death on terrorism charges. This move underscores ongoing diplomatic negotiations involving Russia, the West, and multiple detained individuals. The pardon has been confirmed by Germany's foreign office, providing relief amid complex geopolitical tensions.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has decided to pardon Rico Krieger, a German sentenced to death on terrorism and other charges, the BelTA state news agency reported on Tuesday, citing Lukashenko's press service.
Belarus' close ally Russia is currently in discussions with the West about a possible prisoner exchange involving U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich, convicted on espionage charges, and other Western detainees in Russia. Moscow is keen to free Vadim Krasikov, a Russian serving a life sentence in Germany for murder, which would require negotiations with Berlin.
The German foreign office confirmed Krieger's pardon, with a spokesperson labeling the news as a relief. Earlier this month, German authorities confirmed Krieger's death sentence in Belarus, the only European country still applying capital punishment. In a recent interview, Krieger claimed Ukraine's SBU security service prompted his actions involving explosive devices in Belarus.
