Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court's decision allowing states to create sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes and Tribes. This ruling aims to provide quotas and uplift the more underprivileged castes within these categories.
Addressing the Assembly, Reddy highlighted Telangana's instrumental role in advocating for sub-classifications in the Apex Court. 'I sincerely thank the constitution bench of the Supreme Court of India. Six out of seven judges affirmed that state governments can undertake this sub-classification,' Reddy stated.
The Chief Minister added that Telangana would be the first state to implement the new sub-classifications, and if necessary, will introduce an ordinance to incorporate these changes in ongoing job notifications. A seven-judge constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, ruled by a 6:1 majority that states could further sub-classify SCs and STs to ensure quotas for more backward castes within these groups.
