The 32nd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the world's largest astronomy meeting, will take place from August 6 in Cape Town, South Africa. This marks the first time the assembly is hosted in Africa, and the event will be accessible both in-person and virtually, allowing global participation.
Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Professor Blade Nzimande will deliver the opening address, emphasizing Africa's advancements in astronomy and the significant investments South Africa has made in scientific infrastructure and skills development. His speech will also highlight the geographical benefits of the Karoo's clear southern skies and South Africa's growing international partnerships and standing in the field.
The assembly, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, will feature renowned astronomers Dr. Mae Jemison and Dr. Sian Proctor. Dr. Jemison, the first female African American astronaut, and Dr. Proctor, the first female pilot of a commercial spaceship, will address the gathering of over 2,000 astronomers.
The General Assembly will serve as a platform for discussing contemporary astronomy topics and reviewing recent scientific progress. Notable events include live interactions with astronauts aboard the International Space Station via ham radio, in collaboration with Amateur Radio on the International Space Station.
The conference will include over 2,000 presentations across more than 300 sessions, six symposia, 12 multi-session focus meetings, and various poster sessions and prize lectures. Exhibitors will include prominent institutions such as the South Africa Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), the South African Astronomical Observatory, NASA, the European Space Agency, and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
The event, organized by the National Research Foundation and supported by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), underscores Africa's increasing contribution to global astronomical research and celebrates the continent's rich astronomical heritage.
