Manipur Violence Displaces Thousands and Guts Homes

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh reported that 59,564 people were displaced and 11,133 houses were gutted in fire due to violence in the state. Financial aid was distributed, with Rs 25,000 given to the accounts of 2,792 individuals. Ethnic violence has caused significant harm since May last year.

In a distressing update, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh disclosed to the state Assembly that 59,564 people have been displaced and 11,133 houses were destroyed by fire due to ongoing violence.

Responding to Congress MLA K Ranjit's query, Singh stated that financial aid of Rs 25,000 was disbursed to 2,792 people under the 'One Family One Lakh' scheme. The initial payment has reached 2,156 bank accounts in Kangpokpi district and 512 in Bishnupur. The chief minister assured that the remaining amount would be disbursed soon.

Singh further emphasized that the state's cabinet decided to prioritize aid for those whose homes were completely gutted. Despite administrative hurdles related to land ownership, efforts are underway to expedite the distribution process. The ethnic violence, which began last May, has claimed over 200 lives and left thousands homeless.
