The Indo-Bangladesh border region in West Bengal has been put on high alert following ongoing unrest in the neighboring country. Officials confirmed the heightened security measures on Monday.
BSF sources detailed that a 'high alert' has been mandated across all formations along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border to address developments in the neighboring country. 'We are keeping a close tab on the movement in the bordering areas so that no untoward incident takes place,' a BSF official stated.
BSF Director General (Acting) Daljit Singh Chawdhary, along with other senior commanders, reviewed the security situation by touring some of the border areas in West Bengal. Chawdhary inspected boundary regions in North 24 Parganas district and the Sundarbans riverine area.
State government officials have also instructed the police to maintain vigilance along the border. 'Steps need to be taken to stop any form of provocation here using incidents in Bangladesh,' an official remarked.
Petrapole, a critical land port for trade between India and Bangladesh located in North 24 Parganas, has seen increased BSF patrolling. Under normal circumstances, hundreds of trucks cross daily through this port.
