The Prime Minister fled the country amidst deadly anti-government protests, leading to a power vacuum filled by the Bangladesh Army.
"We are monitoring the situation in Bangladesh closely," stated a White House National Security Council spokesperson on Tuesday, highlighting the US's long-standing call for democratic rights in the country. The spokesperson urged that the interim government be democratic and inclusive.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman, Army Chief of Bangladesh, confirmed in a televised address that the 76-year-old Prime Minister has resigned, taking responsibility for the country. The US National Security Council commended the Army's restraint and encouraged all parties to avoid further violence and restore peace swiftly.
Expressing deep concern and sadness over the casualties and injuries from recent protests, the NSC spokesperson emphasized the importance of a credible investigation into the attacks, ensuring accountability and justice for the victims.
