Retention of LAHDCs' Powers in Ladakh UT

The Indian government confirmed that the democratic representation and decision-making powers of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) continue to be in effect post the Union Territory's formation in 2019. These councils in Leh and Kargil serve as District Planning and Development Boards, taking into account the aspirations of the local populace.

The democratic representation and decision-making powers of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) remain intact following the formation of the Union Territory of Ladakh in 2019, the government informed Parliament on Thursday.

LAHDCs in Leh and Kargil continue to exercise executive authority over various subjects within their districts, with the government confirming this in response to a query about extending tribal area status to the UT.

Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey stated that these councils operate as District Planning and Development Boards and reflect local demands and aspirations, according to responses given to Congress MPs Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka and Tanuj Punia.
