The Union Cabinet on Friday reaffirmed that there is no provision for a creamy layer in reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) as outlined in the Constitution given by B R Ambedkar.

In a meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet extensively discussed the Supreme Court's recent judgment regarding the sub-categorization of SC/ST reservations.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the NDA government is dedicated to adhering to the constitutional provisions set by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Vaishnaw clarified that the Supreme Court's judgment, which suggested identifying the creamy layer among SC/ST communities, was reviewed in the meeting, and the Cabinet supports the idea that SC/ST reservations should follow constitutional guidelines.

He pointed out that this view is a consensus within the Cabinet, addressing concerns raised about potential legislative changes on the issue.

Prime Minister Modi met with a delegation of SC/ST MPs to discuss the reservations and the Supreme Court's observations. He reiterated the government's commitment to the welfare of SC/ST communities.

The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that state governments could sub-classify communities within the SC list based on empirical data, but Prime Minister Modi assured that the government's stance would prevent the court's observations from being implemented.
