Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly condemned the application of the creamy layer concept to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), urging the government to bring legislation in Parliament to nullify the Supreme Court's recent judgement on the issue.

Earlier this month, a seven-judge Bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud ruled that state governments could sub-classify communities within the SC list based on empirical data, prompting Kharge's criticism. He accused the government of trying to end reservation and suppress SCs and STs by implementing the creamy layer concept.

Kharge called upon all people to unite against the judgement, highlighting ongoing discrimination issues faced by SCs and STs, even in high positions. He argued that as long as untouchability exists, reservations should remain in place. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently discussed the judgement and reaffirmed its commitment to the Constitution as outlined by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
