Finance Deputy Minister David Masondo has advised fund members to use their retirement savings sparingly and only in cases of urgent need, as the Two-Pot Retirement System is set to be implemented in less than three weeks.

The new reforms will allow members to withdraw up to a third of their retirement savings before retirement while still preserving a portion of their funds. Masondo emphasized the importance of seeking reliable financial advice to understand the implications of such withdrawals.

Speaking at the Old Mutual Thought Leaders Forum, Masondo stressed the need for financial literacy and education. He highlighted that withdrawals will be subject to administration costs and taxes at marginal rates, which could erode the value of the savings. Additionally, members will forfeit future growth and the retirement benefits intended for those funds.

The Two-Pot Retirement System represents a significant overhaul in South Africa's pension system, aiming to simplify and harmonize pension regulations, encourage savings, and improve the fairness of the retirement system.
