Ukraine announced on Wednesday that it is creating a 'buffer zone' in Russia's Kursk region to facilitate humanitarian assistance and establish evacuation corridors for civilians seeking to move either to Russia or to Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy convened with key officials to discuss the humanitarian situation and potential establishment of military administrations in areas gained by Ukrainian forces since their cross-border assault began on August 6. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk confirmed these plans on the messaging app Telegram.
Ukraine intends to call upon international humanitarian organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations to provide essential supplies like food and medicine within the 'buffer zone,' according to human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets.
