Haitian Prison Breaks Escalate as Gang Violence Surges
In a recent jailbreak in Saint-Marc, Haiti, police are mobilized to search for escaped inmates after similar incidents in recent months. The situation is aggravated by violent gangs breaking inmates out and the resignation of the Prime Minister. The conflict has displaced many and exacerbated hunger.

A recent jailbreak in the city of Saint-Marc, Haiti, marks the third such incident in recent months. Police have been mobilized to track down escaped prisoners, urging the public to report any suspicious activity, according to reports by the Miami Herald.
National authorities have not provided further details, but local officials confirmed the prison housed 502 inmates. Earlier this year, over 4,000 inmates were freed in armed gang attacks on two major prisons, including the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince.
The March jailbreak prompted a state of emergency and led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Despite international pledges, including from Kenya, significant support for the under-resourced police has yet to materialize. The ongoing violence has displaced nearly 600,000 people and pushed nearly half the population into severe hunger.
