Outcry Over Kolkata Medic’s Rape-Murder Spurs Nationwide Protests

The Supreme Court is set to address the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata amid nationwide protests led by healthcare workers and widespread public outcry. Junior doctors in multiple states, including West Bengal and Delhi, went on strike, demanding justice and better security measures for medical professionals.

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, scheduling a hearing for August 20. The incident has sparked nationwide protests, disrupting healthcare services in West Bengal, Delhi, and Goa as junior doctors demand justice and enhanced security for medical personnel.

Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was interrogated by the CBI regarding his communications around the time of the incident. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police summoned TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, and two doctors for allegedly spreading rumours and disclosing the victim’s identity.

Nationwide, protests have continued, with doctors demanding a protective act for healthcare workers. The AIIMS RDA has written to Prime Minister Modi for intervention. The West Bengal government announced measures to ensure women's safety in healthcare facilities, and over 70 Padma awardee doctors called for swift enactment of a law against violence towards medical professionals. The case is under investigation by the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
