Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Challenging Caste System

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition that sought to declare the caste system unconstitutional.

A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud determined that no sufficient case for interference was made out.

The bench, which also included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, noted that the Constitution as originally drafted refers to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The petition had been brought forward by Wazir Singh Poonia, who contended that the caste system goes against fundamental rights.
