The Assam assembly has passed a groundbreaking bill for compulsory government registration of marriage and divorce specifically for the Muslim community.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has lauded the bill, with national spokesperson Vinod Bansal stating it will empower Muslim women and check atrocities against them. He further noted that other states should adopt similar measures for the empowerment of minority women.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that while the bill will enforce new registrations, it will not interfere with existing Islamic rituals under Muslim personnel law. The legislation aims to prevent child marriage, polygamy, and abandonment, while empowering women to claim their legal rights and inheritance.
