Former President Donald Trump was targeted in an apparent assassination attempt at his West Palm Beach golf club, authorities said. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, allegedly pointed a rifle with a scope at Trump before being apprehended. Secret Service agents fired at Routh, who fled the scene but was later captured in a neighboring county.
A motive for the attack is still under investigation, but FBI officials confirmed Trump as the intended target. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, agents noticed Routh with an AK-style rifle while Trump was on the course, leading to the swift response. Trump assured his supporters of his safety in a subsequent email.
This incident marks the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months, following a similar attempt in Pennsylvania. Trump's security detail has been significantly increased, including the use of bulletproof glass at public events.
