U.S. Diplomatic Efforts Seek Lasting Peace Between Israel and Lebanon

U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein revealed on Monday in Beirut that the United States is actively engaging with both Israel and Lebanon to craft a lasting peace agreement. These efforts aim to put a definitive end to the persistent hostilities between the two nations.

The 2006 U.N. Resolution 1701, which initially ended conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, calls for the removal of all armed forces from southern Lebanon, except those belonging to the Lebanese state. Despite this resolution, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah has maintained its presence, exacerbating regional tensions.

Recent cross-border skirmishes included Hezbollah launching missile attacks on northern Israel in support of Hamas, following Israel's recent offensive against the group. Hochstein has been involved in diplomatic discussions with Lebanese leaders, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, in a bid to preclude further escalation and foster regional peace.
