Supreme Court Advocates Educational Access for Rohingya Refugees

The Indian Supreme Court discussed a plea regarding non-discrimination in education for Rohingya refugees. The plea advocates for access to public schools and hospitals in Delhi despite the lack of Aadhaar cards. The refugees, mostly residing in slums, have UNHCR cards but face access issues.

The Supreme Court of India has addressed a significant plea advocating for the educational rights of Rohingya refugees in Delhi. The plea demands non-discriminatory access to public schools and healthcare for these refugees despite their lack of Aadhaar cards.

On Wednesday, a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh emphasized that no child should face educational discrimination. Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the NGO Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, pointed out that UNHCR cards should warrant access to essential services.

The court is set to reconvene in ten days, during which time the NGO is expected to provide further details of the refugee settlements and available facilities. The PIL also requests that government support schemes apply to the Rohingya community just as they would for Indian citizens.
