An Afghan man with alleged Islamist sympathies faced trial in Germany on Thursday, charged with murder and attempted murder following a stabbing spree at a political rally in Mannheim. This legal proceeding occurs amidst intense discussions in Germany regarding asylum policies and national security before the upcoming February election.
Prosecutors identified the accused as Sulaiman A., who allegedly stabbed and seriously injured six individuals, including a 29-year-old policeman who succumbed to his injuries. The attack targeted an anti-Islam rally in late May 2024. The defendant concealed his face with a folder during his appearance at the Stuttgart court.
The suspect was placed in pre-trial detention on June 18 after being released from intensive care due to injuries sustained during the incident.
