India's Undocumented Immigrants: Data Gaps and Diplomatic Dilemmas

The Indian government lacks data on undocumented Indian immigrants in the US, as reported to Parliament. The Indian government has acknowledged a lack of data on the number of undocumented Indian immigrants residing in the United States. These individuals have either violated visa terms or entered illegally, despite having legally exited India.

Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha that no comprehensive data exists but emphasized ongoing cooperation with US authorities in deportation matters. This comes amid heightened deportation activities following recent US policy changes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US coincides with increased scrutiny over immigration policies and deportations, including a recent incident involving 104 Indians. While legal aid for deported or challenged individuals is guided by existing rules, the government remains engaged on issues related to legal migration.
