The BBC found itself under scrutiny after the Enforcement Directorate launched an investigation in April 2023, examining potential breaches of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. This probe came shortly after Indian tax authorities conducted raids on the BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai.

Consequently, the broadcaster was penalized for failing to comply with regulations requiring reduced foreign ownership, facing a daily fine for ongoing violations. The backdrop to these events includes a disputed 2023 BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was condemned by the government as propaganda.
