Supreme Court Emphasizes Better Implementation for a Cleaner Yamuna

The Supreme Court highlighted potential improvements in cleaning the Yamuna river due to recent political changes. It is considering allowing the National Green Tribunal to monitor progress. The Supreme Court observed that plans to clean the Yamuna river might witness better implementation given the recent political shift in Delhi. The remark from the bench, comprising Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih, comes after the BJP took power from the Aam Aadmi Party in the capital.

The court is handling a suo motu case titled 'Remediation of polluted rivers,' focusing on addressing the Yamuna's contamination. Justice Gavai noted that the current circumstances might lead to improved plan execution. Meanwhile, Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora suggested the National Green Tribunal should monitor this issue.

The bench considered consolidating related petitions and queried additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati on the status of other pending cases. The hearing is postponed till post-Holi, with deliberations ongoing about whether the case should return to the NGT for better oversight.
