Gun Trafficking Drama: Israeli's Arrest in Malaysia
An Israeli national, Shalom Avitan, has been sentenced to seven years in prison in Malaysia after pleading guilty to firearm trafficking. The case sparked intrigue due to Avitan's background and motives as Malaysia and Israel lack diplomatic ties, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
An Israeli man, Shalom Avitan, has received a seven-year prison sentence by a Malaysian court following his guilty plea to charges of carrying six firearms and numerous bullets. The arrest, as detailed by his lawyer, occurred last March in Kuala Lumpur, leading to investigations concerning unauthorized trafficking and firearm possession.
Avitan claimed his presence in Malaysia was to resolve a family dispute involving another Israeli citizen, a scenario complicated by the absence of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Israel. This resulted in authorities probing his alleged ties to an Israeli crime group or potential espionage activities.
Upon arriving from the United Arab Emirates using a French passport, Avitan was detained in a Kuala Lumpur hotel after a search revealed a cache of weapons. During questioning, he also presented an Israeli passport. The court accepted his guilty plea, as shared by his lawyer Naran Singh, and confirmed that his sentence would be served at Kajang prison starting from his arrest date last year.
