Government's Litigation Expenditure Exceeds Rs 400 Crore

The government has spent over Rs 400 crore on litigations in the past decade, with annual expenditures increasing since 2014-15. The central government is now formulating a national litigation policy to address these rising costs and expedite case resolutions. A draft awaits final approval from the Union Cabinet.

The government of India has expended a staggering amount of over Rs 400 crore on litigations over the last ten years, according to official data.

This fiscal year alone, Rs 66 crore has been spent, an increase of over Rs 9 crore compared to the previous year. The trend of escalating costs has been evident since the 2014-15 fiscal year, except during the Covid-19 peak.

In response, the government is crafting a national litigation policy aimed at accelerating the resolution of pending cases. Currently, a draft policy is under review and awaiting a decision from the Union Cabinet.
