Ceasefire Negotiations: A New Chapter in Gaza Conflict

Hamas expressed readiness to start talks for the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire after hundreds of Palestinians were released in exchange for the bodies of four Israeli hostages. Hamas announced on Thursday its willingness to initiate the second phase of a ceasefire in Gaza following the exchange deal that freed hundreds of Palestinians for the bodies of four Israeli hostages. This marks the conclusion of the initial six-week ceasefire established on January 19.

The upcoming phase of the ceasefire aims to permanently cease hostilities that erupted in October 2023, when Hamas fighters attacked Israeli towns, leading to Israel's subsequent military retaliation in Gaza. Hamas emphasized that negotiations are crucial to freeing the remaining hostages, contingent on adherence to the ceasefire.

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen highlighted that the return of 59 remaining hostages is a critical priority, yet he affirmed that no progress will be made on the ceasefire's next stage if Hamas remains operational in Gaza. The U.S. and Egyptian mediators played substantial roles in this high-stakes negotiation.
