Ethiopia-Somalia Relations: A Path to Detente Amid Tensions
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Mogadishu to hold discussions with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, amid tensions over Ethiopia's plans in Somaliland. Both nations pledged to resolve their dispute, mediated by Ankara, focusing on granting Ethiopia secure access to the sea while reaffirming cooperation.
Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed landed in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, to hold significant talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, indicating a warming of previously strained relations.
The disagreement stemmed from Ethiopia's January 2024 decision to lease a coastal area in Somalia's Somaliland, intending to construct a naval and commercial facility, which led to accusations from Somalia about a threat to its territorial integrity.
The presidents agreed to a negotiation process mediated by Ankara, aiming to secure Ethiopia's access to maritime trade routes, symbolized by their amiable meeting amidst heightened security.
