The eThekwini Municipality has announced the planned reopening of the Buffelsdraai landfill site, situated in the north-west of Durban, following its closure in July 2023 due to security concerns and public disturbances. The reopening comes after extensive rehabilitation efforts and enhanced security measures aimed at ensuring the site operates safely and efficiently.

Background and Closure

The landfill site was initially closed after it was invaded and set alight by certain members of the public, leading to confrontations between security personnel and trespassers. This resulted in significant damage to the facility and necessitated comprehensive restoration efforts before it could be reopened for waste disposal.

Phased Reopening Timeline

The municipality has outlined a two-phase reopening plan for the Buffelsdraai landfill site:

  • Phase One: Scheduled to commence on 1 April 2025, the site will initially accept garden refuse, builders’ rubble, and sand cover material.
  • Phase Two: Beginning on 1 May 2025, the facility will be fully operational and open to all general waste, including domestic waste.

Mayor's Community Address

In light of the reopening, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba will address residents of Ward 59—which includes Osindisweni, Zwelisha, and neighboring areas in Verulam—on Thursday to provide further details about the reopening process and what community members can expect.

Security Enhancements and Waste Picker Integration

To prevent further unauthorized access and security breaches, the city has implemented a range of robust security measures, including:

  • Strengthened perimeter security to deter intrusions.
  • Increased personnel presence and surveillance mechanisms.
  • Implementation of a waste picker integration program in line with national guidelines, ensuring that informal waste collectors can work in a regulated and structured manner.

Restrictions on Special Waste Disposal

The municipality has also reminded the public that the disposal of condemned food and counterfeit goods remains prohibited at all city landfill sites. Businesses and individuals dealing with such waste must make alternative arrangements with private facilities for proper disposal.

Call for Responsible Waste Management

The city encourages all residents and businesses to adhere to proper waste disposal protocols and support the municipality’s efforts in maintaining a clean and environmentally friendly landfill site.

For more information, residents can contact the eThekwini Municipality Waste Management Department or visit the city's official website for updates on the reopening process.
