Cape Town is set to host a significant diplomatic and innovation-focused event today, as the 8th South Africa-European Union (EU) Summit takes place alongside the inaugural National System of Innovation Transformation Summit. The discussions, attended by key global leaders and stakeholders, are expected to reinforce South Africa's international partnerships and innovation agenda.

The summit, co-chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the European Council António Luís Santos da Costa, and European Commission President Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, will further enhance trade, investment, and strategic cooperation between South Africa and the EU.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, highlighted the summit's significance during a briefing following the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 12 March 2025. She emphasized that the agenda includes economic collaboration, climate action, security, and global governance reforms.

"The summit will discuss issues of trade and investment, along with greater mutual cooperation and reinforced bilateral relations between South Africa and the European Union. It will also explore collaborative approaches to addressing regional and global challenges, including climate change, human insecurity, peace, security and stability, the green transition, and reform of global governance institutions," Ntshavheni stated.

Support for South Africa's G20 Presidency

A crucial aspect of the summit will be reaffirming support for South Africa's G20 Presidency. Leaders will discuss the country's strategic objectives under the theme Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability, highlighting South Africa's role in global economic policy and development.

Advancing Innovation and Socio-Economic Development

Coinciding with the diplomatic gathering, South Africa is also hosting the Inaugural National System of Innovation Transformation Summit on 13-14 March 2025. This groundbreaking event brings together science councils, higher education institutions, government representatives, business leaders, and organized labor to evaluate and enhance the National System of Innovation (NSI).

"The summit aims to harness South Africa's science, technology, and innovation capabilities to foster inclusion and socio-economic growth," Ntshavheni added.

The discussions will focus on leveraging research, technological advancements, and innovation-driven solutions to address national and global challenges while ensuring sustainable development for all South Africans.

These summits mark a critical step in strengthening South Africa's role in international diplomacy and economic development, reinforcing its commitment to collaboration, innovation, and inclusive progress.
