The Maharashtra government is set to take a 'balanced decision' on the long-standing issue of temple inam lands, aiming to ensure justice for farmers while preserving temple rituals, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule disclosed to the Legislative Council on Monday.
Many of these plots are soil grant lands owned by temples, while others are revenue grant lands where temples have revenue collection rights. A committee led by the principal secretary has submitted its findings, which will guide the government towards a fair outcome, involving consultations with the Chief Minister and department heads.
A decision is expected to be made in an upcoming cabinet meeting, with the possibility of new legislation if needed. This resolution is crucial for approximately 1.25 lakh farming families reliant on inam lands. The issue came under discussion following a calling attention motion by MLC Sadabhau Khot.
