The Indian government has enforced strict quality norms for hinges in an effort to limit the influx of inferior imports and promote domestic production. The recently issued Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2025, mandates that all items, unless exported or used in research, must have the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark.

Starting from July 1, 2025, any manufacturer or trader found violating this order will face penalties under the BIS Act, 2016, including imprisonment for up to two years or a minimum fine of Rs 2 lakh on the first offence. Repeat offenders may face harsher penalties, including fines of up to 10 times the value of the non-compliant goods.

These quality control orders (QCOs) are part of a broader initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade to enhance quality awareness among manufacturers and users, while ensuring consumer safety and environmental wellbeing.
