The investigation into the custodial death of Dalit protester Somnath Suryavanshi, which occurred in Maharashtra's Parbhani district in December, has now been handed over to the state CID, according to police officials.
The CID unit in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recently assumed responsibility for the probe from the Parbhani police. Suryavanshi, arrested following violence over the desecration of a Constitution replica, died at a state hospital on December 15. Initial police reports suggested he died after falling ill.
However, a magisterial inquiry concluded that police negligence led to his death, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission noted last week. The CID is now analyzing CCTV footage and awaiting post-mortem results to understand the protester's untimely death.
