Polish-Russian Diplomatic Rift Escalates After Warsaw Fire

Poland plans to close the Russian consulate in Krakow following evidence linking Russia to a large fire in a Warsaw shopping centre. Diplomatically tense relations have deteriorated further since the Ukraine invasion, with both nations exchanging allegations of sabotage and deliberate diplomatic provocation.

Poland has summoned the Russian ambassador and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Krakow. This decision follows evidence implicating Moscow in a devastating fire at a Warsaw shopping centre in 2024, further harming already strained relations post-Ukraine invasion.

The Polish government positions itself as a crucial supporter of Kyiv, attributing Russian sabotage, cyberattacks, and disinformation efforts to its involvement. Moscow, however, denies these allegations, claiming Poland's actions undermine diplomatic ties.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk insists the fire is a result of Russian secret service operations, and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has revoked consular consent in response. Poland has also previously closed the Russian consulate in Poznan, highlighting ongoing tensions.
