In a landmark ruling, the Coimbatore Mahila Court sentenced nine men to life imprisonment for the heinous crimes of sexual assault and extortion in the infamous Pollachi case. This verdict, praised by both Chief Minister M K Stalin and the opposition AIADMK, also includes an Rs 85 lakh compensation to the victims.
The verdict has triggered a political stir, with AIADMK members recalling that the case was transferred to the CBI for an impartial investigation under the previous government. Meanwhile, accusations fly between AIADMK and DMK, with the former promising to expose the ruling party's alleged political interference in the case.
Notably, actor-politician Vijay and various women's associations have applauded the decision. There are growing demands for setting up fast-track courts to ensure timely justice in sexual harassment cases, highlighting the need for swift legal processes to protect women's rights.
