In a momentous ceremony marking a new chapter in India’s medical education journey, President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, graced the first convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Kalyani, as the Chief Guest. The event was a milestone not only for the institution but also for its pioneering batch of medical graduates who will now carry forward the institution's legacy.
Doctors as Architects of National Health
Addressing the gathering of students, faculty, and dignitaries, President Murmu underscored the indispensable role of medical professionals in nation-building. She noted that India’s average life expectancy has more than doubled since independence—from 32 years in 1947 to nearly 70 years today—thanks in large part to medical advancements and the dedication of healthcare professionals.
The President praised India’s significant strides in public health, especially in disease eradication and vaccination campaigns. She highlighted the recent achievement of India being declared trachoma-free, calling it a testament to the combined efforts of healthcare providers and public health policymakers. However, she cautioned that the battle is far from over.
“There are growing challenges like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and lifestyle-related disorders. In tackling these, young doctors will have a more decisive role than even the government or policy bodies,” she said.
The Torchbearers of AIIMS Kalyani
In a heartfelt message to the graduating students, President Murmu acknowledged their unique place in the history of AIIMS Kalyani as its first batch of graduates. She described them not only as students but as founding members of a future legacy, emphasizing their responsibility to build the institute’s reputation on national and global platforms.
“You are the first alumni, and thus, you are not only the flag-bearers of your own careers but also the architects of AIIMS Kalyani’s future identity,” she said.
She encouraged the graduates to take pride in their alma mater and to actively contribute towards its growth and excellence in medical education and research.
Embracing Change: A Call for Lifelong Learning
President Murmu urged the medical graduates to remain lifelong learners, highlighting the rapid pace of change in medical science, research methodologies, and clinical practices. She stressed that staying current with global medical advancements is not just a professional obligation, but a moral one.
“Each day brings new developments in diagnosis, treatment, and medical technology. You must embrace learning as a permanent companion,” she advised.
Drawing Inspiration from Dr. B.C. Roy
The President reflected on the rich historical context of the city of Kalyani, which owes its foundation to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India’s most respected physicians and statesmen. She recalled how Dr. Roy continued to serve the poor for free even while holding the office of Chief Minister of West Bengal.
“He embodied the spirit of selfless service. His life is a model for every Indian doctor. I urge all of you to emulate that spirit—serve with compassion, humility, and integrity,” she said.
She appealed to the AIIMS community to commit themselves to making AIIMS Kalyani a symbol of national pride, echoing the values laid down by Dr. Roy.
Promoting Preventive Healthcare and Lifestyle Leadership
In her closing remarks, President Murmu emphasized that a doctor’s influence goes beyond prescriptions and surgeries. She highlighted the growing relevance of lifestyle diseases and the importance of preventive healthcare.
“Most health issues today are preventable with the right lifestyle. As doctors, your advice carries enormous influence. But when you lead by example—when you live a healthy lifestyle yourself—your impact is magnified,” she asserted.
She encouraged doctors to include dietary guidance, exercise regimens, and stress management advice as a routine part of their consultations, urging them to become role models of holistic well-being in society.
A Historic Beginning
The convocation ceremony was a historic and emotional moment for AIIMS Kalyani, marking its transition from a developing institute to a contributor in India’s prestigious AIIMS network. Faculty, parents, and dignitaries from across sectors gathered to honor the achievements of this trailblazing batch of medical professionals, who now step out to serve the nation.
As the graduates received their degrees amid applause, President Murmu’s message served not just as a ceremonial address but a profound call to action for a new generation of doctors—to heal not only with knowledge, but with compassion, integrity, and vision.
