The Meghalaya government has initiated a probe into the alleged misappropriation of over 4,000 metric tonnes of coal, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Saturday. Tynsong, who also manages the Home portfolio, stated that district authorities and police have been instructed to conduct an exhaustive inquiry.

Deputy commissioners and police superintendents have been tasked with investigating any potential misappropriation or illegal diversion of coal, said Tynsong to PTI. This directive follows a High Court-appointed committee's report revealing that declared and inventoried coal has disappeared from two storage sites.

The latest report to the Meghalaya High Court highlights concerns about the state's coal monitoring and transportation mechanisms. Tynsong assured that the government will pursue legal avenues, including approaching the Supreme Court if needed, should any misconduct be identified. A detailed report will be compiled and submitted to the court.
