Union minister Jitendra Singh marked a significant milestone for the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) by opening a new court-cum-office complex in Guwahati. This long-awaited infrastructure upgrade comes nearly four decades after the tribunal's inception in 1985.
The Guwahati bench, which has historically operated from rented spaces, has cleared over 8.88 lakh cases, with 2.54 lakh resolved in just the last 10 years. Singh highlighted the role of technological innovations such as e-filing, video conferencing, and digital records in enhancing the tribunal's efficiency.
This development underscores a larger pattern of transformation across the Northeast region in the past decade. However, Singh raised concerns about frequent appeals to higher courts undermining the CAT's purpose, calling for collective efforts to preserve the tribunal's function.
