Britain is set to implement a new deal with France to manage migrant returns, following the treaty's ratification on Tuesday. The 'one in, one out' program, announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, aims to return undocumented arrivals while accepting legitimate asylum seekers with connections in Britain.

The agreement, which gained approval from the European Commission and EU member states, involves France accepting returns of undocumented individuals arriving in Britain by small boats. In return, Britain will accept a similar number of asylum seekers. Signed last week, the plan targets a return of about 50 individuals a week—far fewer than the 35,000 arrivals reported last year.

With more than 25,000 migrants already arriving in 2025 on small boats, the British government intensifies its efforts against people-smugglers and has placed sanctions, curbed social media adverts, and collaborated with delivery firms to address illegal work that migrants are often promised.
