Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced the appointment of Roche Mogorosi as the acting Head of Department (HOD) for the province’s Community Safety Department, following the suspension of senior officials over alleged financial misconduct.
The decision comes after a forensic investigation into the department revealed suspected financial irregularities, prompting the immediate suspension of the current HOD, Nontsikelelo Sisulu, and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mduduzi Malope, earlier this week.
Restoring Public Trust
Premier Lesufi emphasised that the leadership change is aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring accountability in the department’s operations.
“We are committed to restoring public trust and strengthening governance. Mogorosi has the expertise to lead the department with integrity, as we work to ensure accountability and continued service delivery to the people of Gauteng,” Lesufi said.
The Premier reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and maladministration, adding that decisive action is essential to protect the integrity of provincial governance.
Mogorosi’s Extensive Experience
According to the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), Mogorosi brings a wealth of experience in public administration and strategic management. His career spans multiple fields, including:
-
Governance and policy implementation
-
Public participation processes
-
Human resources management
-
Strategic programme management
Prior to his new appointment, Mogorosi served as Chief Director of Schools Technology Support Services at the Gauteng Department of Education, where he was responsible for overseeing large-scale technology integration projects across the province’s schools.
Academic Credentials
Mogorosi’s qualifications reflect his strong background in governance and leadership:
-
Master of Management in Governance – Wits School of Governance
-
Master of Business Administration (MBA) – Tshwane University of Technology
The GPG expressed confidence that his academic grounding and practical leadership experience will ensure continuity of service delivery and stability in the department during this transitional period.
Focus on Stability and Accountability
The Gauteng Community Safety Department plays a crucial role in crime prevention strategies, community policing initiatives, and safety policy oversight. With the suspension of the top two financial and administrative leaders, the department faces a critical moment requiring strong interim leadership.
Lesufi’s administration has promised full cooperation with any further investigations and pledged to implement governance reforms where necessary. The outcome of the forensic probe is expected to determine the long-term leadership arrangements for the department.
