The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of three suspected extortionists in Lower Crossroads, Western Cape, following a tense shootout during an intelligence-driven operation. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat extortion-related crimes that have gripped several communities in Cape Town.
Intelligence-Led Operation in Ntambanane Road
On Monday, police received credible information about a group of suspected extortionists operating from a building in Ntambanane Road, Lower Crossroads. Acting on the tip-off, officers conducted surveillance of the premises and confirmed the presence of the suspects.
When police moved in to approach the building, they came under fire from one of the suspects. Officers immediately returned fire, wounding a 29-year-old man in the process. The suspect was arrested on the scene and taken under police guard to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Firearm Linked to Previous Case
A search of the premises yielded a significant haul of weapons and ammunition. Police recovered a 9mm Z88 pistol with its serial number intact, three 9mm magazines, and 45 rounds of ammunition. Subsequent checks revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen at Philippi SAPS in June 2025, linking it to prior criminal activity.
The recovery of the weapon is expected to provide vital evidence in ongoing investigations into firearm-related crimes and the circulation of stolen guns in Cape Town’s crime hotspots.
Two Women Also Arrested
In addition to the injured suspect, police also arrested two women, aged 19 and 28, who were found at the premises. All three suspects face multiple charges, including:
-
Possession of an unlicensed firearm
-
Illegal possession of ammunition
-
Attempted murder
-
Attack on police officers
The suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court once formal charges have been finalised.
Rising Threat of Extortion in Cape Town
The arrests come against the backdrop of growing concern about extortion gangs in Cape Town. Many communities, particularly in the Cape Flats, have reported an alarming rise in criminal syndicates demanding "protection fees" from small businesses, taxi operators, and even construction companies.
SAPS has intensified its operations against these criminal networks, with recent crackdowns aimed at disrupting their operations and recovering illegal firearms often used in violent crimes. Police say the successful arrests in Lower Crossroads underscore their commitment to rooting out organised crime in affected communities.
SAPS Commends Officers and Appeals for Public Cooperation
Western Cape SAPS commended the swift and brave response of its members during the confrontation, noting that their actions prevented further harm. The service also urged residents to continue sharing information about criminal activities, stressing that community cooperation is vital in the fight against extortion and violent crime.
Residents are reminded that any suspicious activities can be reported anonymously through the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS mobile application.
Looking Ahead
While the three arrests are a significant step forward, police have acknowledged that the fight against extortion in the Western Cape is far from over. Investigations into possible links between the suspects and larger extortion networks are ongoing. Authorities hope the latest breakthrough will send a strong message to other criminal groups that law enforcement remains determined to dismantle their operations.
