In a significant move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared on Thursday that the state has released 840 life-term prisoners since 2011, all of whom had served more than 14 years of their sentences.

In addition, Banerjee announced the impending release of another 45 inmates, following a thorough legal process. She acknowledged the exemplary behavior of these individuals during incarceration as a pivotal factor in their release.
