The Andhra Pradesh police closed access to the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam district on Sunday after a tragic accident occurred during a religious gathering, resulting in nine fatalities.

The victims, eight women and one boy, died when a gate malfunction led to a crush of devotees. Survivors reported the lone entry gate unexpectedly closed, causing panic and subsequent injuries.

The district's superintendent of police highlighted the temple's lack of required permissions and failure to alert authorities for crowd management. A case has been filed against the organizers under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
