A newborn boy stolen from a hospital's infant care ward in Kushinagar has been safely recovered, according to local police authorities. The child, taken by a woman from Manikoura village, was found and brought back within 30 hours of the crime, officials confirmed on Friday.
The accused, identified as Poonam Devi, purportedly took the baby under the guise of breastfeeding. Devi's subsequent actions involved fleeing the hospital and attempting to raise the child as her own. The motive, police revealed, was tied to her personal circumstances—her husband is dead, and she has three daughters but no sons.
Swift police work, aided by CCTV footage and community tips, led to the baby's recovery. The newborn was discovered safely wrapped in cloth at a village representative's house and promptly returned to the medical facility for care. Devi now faces legal charges, including child abduction.
