The Election Commission of India has taken significant steps to address safety concerns for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) involved in the Summary Revision of Rolls (SIR) in West Bengal. Recent threats reported against these field officials have spurred the commission to call for heightened security measures.
This communication from the EC marks the second such directive to the state in recent days, following a serious security breach at the CEO's office in Kolkata reported earlier in the week. With growing tension, BJP's state chief has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of creating an intimidating atmosphere to manipulate the electoral process.
As the situation unfolds, the EC has instructed both the West Bengal Police and the Kolkata Police Commissioner to ensure the continuous safety of BLOs and related officials. Efforts to expedite the relocation of the CEO's office to a more secure location are also underway.
